As a professional recording, editing and mixing engineer I’ve had a lot of experience with the challenges and possibilities within modern DAW audio production. I founded my recording studio about 12 years ago for my own projects. As that studio became commercial, I was tasked to do better work, more quickly and bring my clients the best, most modern tools. iZotope Neutron introduces modern tools like Dynamic EQ, machine learning for multiband compression crossovers and much, much more. This course covers what a beginner needs to know while offering the perspective of a seasoned producer using these tools in a commercial setting.
Modern Tools for Full -Length Albums to Sound Design
At the heart of Neutron is a technology called Inter-Plugin Communication (or IPC). IPCallows plugins to 'talk' to each other and control each other's settings. This allows you to apply changes across your mix quickly and intuitively based on the larger artistic goals of your project! For example, you can using EQ inverse linking to boost a specific frequency on your guitar track, while creating a precise opposite cut to your keyboard track. Imagine using the Visual Mixer to set width, panning and volume for any track in your mix from one visual dashboard... And then A/B different mix snapshots to see what you like best.

When you’ve completed this course, you’ll understand all of the main features of Neutron and how and when to use them. But, that is really just the beginning because Neutron uses machine learning to automate and/or enhance so many mixing tasks. You’ll develop a workflow that will help you make better mixes, more quickly - and in a more fun way! After we check out the ground-breaking Mix Assistant (which basically can automatically mix your track for you), the course will present a strategy for good mixing:
Mixing for Balance (Unmasking, Sculptor and Transient Shaper)
Mixing for Clarity (Sculptor, Track Enhance, Visual Mixer, Gating &HPFs)
And Mixing for Consistency (Dynamic/Sidechain EQ, Bass and Multi-band Compression)
Towards the end of the course, there is a whole section on doing your own pre-mastering using iZotope Neutron’s cousin software - Ozone. You’ll learn about mastering for streaming, loudness and even using Master Assistant to master your track to match any reference track of your choice! This section is a bonus to Neutron users since many Neutron users likely have access to Ozone. But, rest assured that this course focuses on Neutron and Neutron's modules.
