DescriptionThis course takes you on a journey from the very beginning of the drug discovery industry to how it became as we know it today. Drug discovery as an industry, whether pharma or biotech has completely changed our lives forever. The way to the future is reliant on this century of biological sciences where advances in drug discovery are crucial for maintaining healthy aging and winning the fights against the uncurable so far, cancers and neurodegenerative disorders. In the first 4 chapters, you will be introduced to the history of drug discovery and how the industry came to life. You will also see our deep need and reliance on drug discovery and the limitations of the process so far. We will then go through some of the physicochemical basics of drug discovery and the rules drugs must follow to enter the body and function properly. You will also see how the body handles drugs and metabolises them as well as the drug discovery pipeline from the lab bench to the market. From chapter 5, you will be pushed to self-learn with thought slides. You will get the starting points on how drugs are searched for using cellular mechanisms and biochemical pathways, as well as the modern techniques involved. Last but not least, you will see some of the molecules in our bodies that are used as templates to design new drugs.
