DescriptionA doctoral program in occupational therapy challenges students to develop their own capstone experience based on professional interests for their final rotation. This course includes a critically appraised topic on visual impairments in patients with an acquired brain injury (ABI) and an occupational therapy doctoral capstone project for inpatient rehabilitation vision screening of patients post acquired brain injury. The course is 30 minutes in length and is broken down into 5 lectures. This course reviews relevant literature, capstone needs assessment, frame of reference used, learning objectives/activities and artifacts, results from vision screen, comparing findings to similar studies, and a new proposed conceptual model to improve care for patients with visual impairment. Capstone objectives achieved include the following: 1. completion of vision impairment course, 2. pilot program development to increase occupational therapist productivity and patient satisfaction, 3. applying for IRB approval for research implementation, 4. evaluating data to determine prevalence of visual impairment and effectiveness of vision screen, and 5. creating continuing education materials for healthcare providers. Overarching doctoral goals include the following: examine the impact of ABI on visual function and perception, reevaluate occupational therapist approach and role in care, and propose a conceptual model for inpatient vision screening protocol.
