What you'll learn- Students will learn about driving rehabilitation and conducting driving evaluations.
DescriptionI will be discussing the literature review I conducted, as well as the learning objectives, activities and artifacts that I completed throughout my doctoral capstone experience. By the end of this session, you should be able to understand the barriers to conducting driving evaluations, as well as driving program barriers, you should be able to identify ways to advocate for Medicare reimbursement at the local and state levels, and identify 4 main components to the clinical driving evaluation. I am completing my capstone experience in the adaptive driving program at West Florida Rehabilitation Institute at West Florida Hospital in Pensacola, FL. The adaptive driving program offers pre-driving evaluations including cognitive and perceptual skills, driving history, functional mobility, general history, occupational profile, medical history, reaction time testing, strength/dexterity assessment, and vision screening. Behind-the-wheel evaluations are also provided based upon appropriate clinical screening/pre-driving evaluation results. Behind-the-wheel evaluations consist of assessing for adaptive equipment, controlling vehicle speed and placement, driver training in the use of adaptive devices, following directions, getting in and out of the vehicle, and using judgment in traffic situations. There will be questions asked at the end of this course, with answers provided on the last two slides before the references.
