What you'll learn- More about my doctoral capstone experience
DescriptionHello! My name is Katelyn Smith and I am currently a third-year occupational therapy student at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. During this presentation, I will be discussing my doctoral capstone experience at Courage League Sports. I will be discussing what I completed during my 14 weeks and my capstone goals. During this presentation, I will go into more depth about Courage League Sports’ background, my doctoral capstone objectives, and the benefits of adaptative sports. For my doctoral capstone, I focused on programming as it gave me an opportunity to get involved with the Des Moines, Iowa community and work in a non-traditional occupational therapy setting to further expand my occupational therapy knowledge. Throughout this experience, I have written tumbling and swimming programs for individuals with a variety of abilities. I have gained additional experience in modifying and adapting certain tasks based on the participants I am working with. I have also gained experience assisting children across the Des Moines community complete different sports. This experience has furthered my passion for the pediatric population and adaptive sports. Due to COVID, most of my capstone experience was completed at home by working on writing programming virtually. However, I did assist with classes in the evenings during the week and on Saturday mornings. All participants were required to wear a mask and having temperature checks when arriving to ensure safety among participants.
