Students entering college require the ability to communicate clearly in written English. A firm grasps of essay writing and editing skills provides a foundation for other courses in college and helps students communicate effectively in the workplace. Many students have difficulties grasping the specific purpose and requirements of academic assessment tasks. Frequently, students' written work lacks a coherent focus and is descriptive rather than analytical. Academic Writing I has been specifically designed so that students can improve their language skills to be able to produce an acceptable standard of written communication in all disciplines at the Undergraduate level.

This is a writing course focusing on expository writings. Basic editing principles are covered and applied to all writing. Selected essays are read and examined as examples of the expository styles to improve critical reading skills, grammar skills, and essay writing. As well, research techniques and documentation are emphasized as methods to enhance writing.

The course seeks to provide students with a systematic approach to academic writing. It aims to provide students with essential skills that will assist them in improving their writing competency, thus enhancing the quality of their academic output. Accordingly, this course seeks to encourage an interactive and supportive environment for the development of a writing community in which students can discuss their responses to assignments, discuss the results of their reading and research, and help fellow classmates improve drafts with suggestions for revision.
